This is an insanely difficult top-down shooter. Without the A-B-B-A continue, it would be impossible to beat the game.
First off, the game is 20 years old and my view must be colored by time, so I grant that. Nonetheless, your character dies too easily and there is so much havoc on screen that staying alive all the way through is impossible. The discrete shooting angles for you versus homing fire from many of the enemies is no help either.
The first time I played Ikari Warriors was when it came out. My friend Julian and I played it for hours, finally getting near the end and we got stuck behind some pipes and could not get out. We gave up after that and shut the game off.
This time I played it on the web at EveryVideoGame.com, which has a ton of old NES games. I made it past those pipes and to the final boss room, but failed to realize that I would not have any handy continues there (either that or my button pressing was not recognized somehow). Anyway, yet again, 20 years later, I still haven't beaten the game. I'll get it next time, though, for sure.
