This is a pretty awesome game that, sadly, kills my computer and that drags down the enjoyment by a huge factor.
First of all, this is a fantastic game! The graphics are very nice, or at least they can be if you have a million dollar PC. This is an excellent shooter in every department. The weapons are useful and different (chainsaw bayonet, need I say more?). The look and feel of everything is engaging and authentic. Everything sounds excellent too, including the weapon fire.
The only complaint that I have is purely technical. Dell billed our laptops as "The ultimate gaming laptop" and yet here we are, less than a year later, and a current title is destroying this machine. For starters, I spent at least four hours sorting out and trying various drivers. This is more a Dell problem than a Gears problem, but it was a problem while I was trying to play the game nonetheless. Before I launch the game, I have a batch script to kill about 20 services and a few processes to try and free every available resource for this hog. I am running at 640 rez with everything turned down to minimum and, yet, somehow, it STILL has hitches in the frame rate all. the. time.
After writing the last paragraph, I dropped the rating from 8 to 7. The game deserves a 9, but the implementation and complete inability to work smoothly with my system drop the score two full points for technical failure.
