Though they may have captured the content of the original, this remake fails to capture the spirit and is leaving me terribly disappointed.

I am a huge fan of the original Tomb Raider, counting it in my top five games of all time. Many of the things that made the original great are sadly lost in this version. The first problem is the change in mechanics. Where is the walk button? I want to walk up to the edge of a great precipice and look around without fear of falling. Where is the quick turn-around button? Now I have to have weapons out to do that or any of the side or back flips. Lost, then, are the cool moves that made me feel like a ninja. Why does swimming have to be so difficult?

I used to get a solid target lock and I could jump around, evading enemies and blasting away at them. Now they outrun and outmaneuver me. The game features some kind of dodge move, but either I do not understand it or it just doesn't work, because I press the buttons as requested and I still get pummeled by angry foes.

I accept that I am in a different place in my life than I was when the original came out. I do. But I feel like this game has lost the magic. I do not feel the thrill of adventure or the excitement of danger. I feel the loss of a sense of exploration and the distinct impression that I am playing a video game.
