Despite technical issues with the input system, Red Steel is a fun shooter with a great control scheme.
I am coming to Red Steel long after its release as a launch title for the Wii. I have read and heard all the bad press and poor reviews. As a result, I expected nothing good from this game.
I have played the first two levels so far (ending in the parking garage) and I am having a great time! I enjoy the comic book style cut scenes. The story is playing out like a fun popcorn action movie.
Red Steel's control scheme is definitely "the right way" to harness the unique capabilities of the Wii. The implementation may have issues, but they nailed the design. Looking around with the Wiimote is intuitive and smooth. The lock-on mechanic is a great method to compensate for the timing and accuracy issues I was experiencing early on.
It is likely that my high opinion of Red Steel is due in large part to very low expectations. In any case, I am having fun now and hope that continues to be true all the way to the closing credits.
