Decent melee combat and good graphics cannot carry this otherwise mediocre title.
For the most part, melee combat feels very solid. Enemies stagger realistically when hit. Weapons feel appropriately weighted and balanced. The last level in particular milks the melee combat for everything it's worth to offer some pretty intense sequences. Unfortunately, I did not like the range of most enemies in the game. Bad guys hit me when I felt that they were too far away. Also, guns have very limited ammo for the player and limitless stores of ammo for bad guys. Oh, and you cannot get more bullets, so what you have in a gun is all you will get. That's just dumb.
The game did include plenty of frightening moments. One good point is that, unlike Doom 3, the scares were not mostly cheap jump-out tactics. It also featured some truly creepy scenes and an oppressive atmosphere. However, many times it was just too dark to see anything or make out details. I have a particular dislike for overly dark games and this one is a serious offender (I am talking about lighting, not mood here).
Another failure of this game is the story. It had lots of potential, but really fell apart at the end. Like many games these days, it failed to bring anything to a close or tie up a single loose end. Epic fail.
