Black had a lot of prerelease hype, but it didn't live up to it in the end. Despite its shortcomings, though, Black is far from being a bad game.
First of all, Black looks, feels, and sounds great. The graphics are solid, from the weapons to the buildings and surroundings. It employs a neat feature when you reload that focuses on your weapon reloading action and blurs out the rest of your view. This is just eye candy, but a nice touch. Everything sounds pretty good too. The weapons generally have a solid feel, though a few of them are hardly distinguishable from each other.
The problem with this game is that it's just not engaging. The story is modern-day military stuff, chock full of conspiracy theory tidbits everywhere. You have some sort of team or partner or command structure, but I don't even know who I am supposed to be, let alone who these other characters are. It is hard to care about anything or anyone under these circumstances.
After a couple of levels, I shut it off to take a break. Black isn't bad, it just doesn't grab my attention and make me want to keep going, like Halo or Half Life.
