After completing a particularly difficult fight to end a mission, I found myself utterly stupified to see that the game was over.
I had been tracking my progress through the game using the % complete stat on my profile page. I was barely 30% complete when, to my surprise, the game ended. Apparently that statistic refers to the ENTIRE game, including all four difficulty settings, not just as it applies to the current campaign. This was disappointing, because the story ended abruptly and without any resolution or sense of closure. I never really found out who was involved, nor even who I was supposed to be.
I replayed a few levels on easy and hard settings. Easy offered "silver weapons", which are essentially the standard weapons with unlimited ammo. This was entertaining for a short time since I could pick up the rocket launcher and just demolish everything in my path. The hard setting turned up the difficulty some, but did not really offer anything new beyond that, so the replay value remains very low.
In the end, Black turned out to be an average FPS at best. The story is convoluted and incomplete. The graphics and sound effects are solid, but the lack of inspired gameplay and options just drag this title down to rental status.
