Good graphics, sound, and an absolutely superb story come together to bring Indiana Jones to the PC in grand fashion.
In 1992, the adventure genre was strong on PCs. Commonly called point-n-click, these games would feature a series of puzzles to solve as a means of advancing the game. Most of the puzzles involved picking up items and then combining them in specific locations and combinations in order to affect change. I was never a fan of this genre. In fact, I am still not a fan of this genre. With the exception of "D", an old Playstation game, I have not really liked any point-n-click games that I have tried. I always believed that they were too restrictive, limiting my ability to devise creative solutions.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis did nothing to change my attitude about the genre as a whole, but the fantastic story hooked me from the beginning and I could not stop playing. I desperately wanted to follow Indy's adventure to see if he would indeed find the lost city and what treasures it might have tucked away. The story delivered all the way through. Indy is carried from his office to sites across the globe as he searches for clues leading toward the discovery of Atlantis.
The graphics and sounds really complement the storytelling to create an excellent package that is exciting and entertaining from start to finish. While the graphics cannot be compared to those of modern games, they are still quite good. Many of the scenes and locations are both attractive and intriguing. I was left on numerous occassions just wanting the opportunity to explore some of the locations more, just to see what else I could find. The music and sounds are equally impressive. While the voice of Indy is not Harrison Ford, the actor does a great job and you won't be left feeling let down. A few of the other voices are a bit spotty, but on the whole they all work well. The musical score is excellent, helping to really set the mood for different sequences.
I have always been a fan of Indiana Jones and I am glad that I finally had the opportunity to play such an excellent game. I am also glad that I found a walkthrough to help me complete the puzzles more quickly so that I could enjoy the story. Making a game that is still appealing 14 years later is no easy task, but the team at Lucas Arts responsible for this game certainly succeeded. Cheers!
