Onimusha Warlords bring swords and Samurai warriors to Resident Evil style survival horror. The good news is that this game can be very fun. The bad news is that it comes from the Resident Evil breed and totes along some of that baggage.
Onimusha Warlords came out way back in 2001. At the time, the gameplay was hot and the graphics were hotter. The graphics are still impressive today, maybe even more so because of the game's age. The gameplay is solid, though the controls are like Resident Evil, meaning very stiff, especially for a sword-based fighting game.
Since this is 2006 and I have already played Ninja Gaiden (particularly Black), I can see a lot of inspiration for NGB coming from games like Onimusha Warlords. That is a pretty strong compliment, since NGB is probably one of the best action fighting games ever made. The combat in this game is nowhere near the complexity of NGB's combat system, but it does have quite a few nuances that, if you learn, you can exploit to your advantage and become a pretty powerful warrior.
The worst parts about this game so far (aside from the controls) revolve around the story. The voice acting in this game is terrible. The dialog was either poorly translated or really bad to begin with, but either way it stumbles and occassionally just falls apart, leaving me asking "uh, what just happened?".
The game is very enjoyable if you can get past the limitations of the controls and forgive some of these other problems. All in all it is working out to be fairly average.
