Ninja Gaiden features an incredible combat system that is both deep and rewarding. This is not to be taken lightly, though, because the combat learning curve is very steep.

I played all the way through this game before I really started to understand the combat. This experience, coupled with my previously upgraded gear, made the second time through even more enjoyable. The combat engine alone provides enough replay value to keep you coming back to this game.

Everything about this game stands out head-and-shoulders above the competition. The various weapons offer significant differences, allowing for multiple fighting styles. The graphics are superb. The movement and animations are fluid and the game does not slow down or start chopping on any of the sequences, including the huge boss fights. The audio is also very solid.

The only thing that prevents this title from getting a perfect 10 is the unavoidably frustrating and long term commitment required to actually start learning the combat and to become successful. In fact, without the GameFAQs detailed combat guides, I probably would never have really been able to appreciate the combat or the weapons.

Even though it takes a serious time commitment to learn this game, it is well worth the effort. Ninja Gaiden Black is in the top five all-time best xbox games list, without a doubt.
